In case you're the last one on the planet to know.... I'm a lesbian. Why am I putting this out on my blog today? Because it's 40 years since Stonewall and we still don't have civil rites. It's 40 years since the drag queens and fags stood up and fought. And we are still discussing whether two people who love each other have a right to form a family. We're still discussing whether some religious people have a right to tell other religious people how to practice their religion. We're still throwing talented, committed men and women out of the military because they love someone of the same gender.
So in honour of Harvey Milk, in honour of Stonewall, in honour of every single person who has been murdered as a hate crime, in honour of every single person who has committed suicide in despair....
I'm coming out again.
I'm a freind, a lover, a wife, a daughter, an aunt, a grandmother, a partner, a sister, a minister, a sales rep, a student, a teacher, a writer, a photographer, a videographer, a recovering person, a member of AARP, and I.... I am a lesbian. I am a lesbian who likes to dress like a man and take up my space in the world. And I do not apologize for who I am or who I love.
If you're queer, too ... lesbian, gay, bi, trans, intersex, or ally.....then I'm asking you to honour all those who have gone before us and every person on the planet who is still persecuted, murdered, for everyone who lives in fear, for every person who will commit suicide today.... I'm asking you from my heart. Stand up. Come OUT. Speak out. Refuse to be quiet. Refuse to behave.
Fly your rainbow flag. Put your rainbow sticker on your door, your car, your church. Let the demon of fear and denial and the closet come OUT!
It's 40 years. It's Pride Month. It's time.
